Sloppy White - Old School Hip Hop Mixes!
Over the years, Sloppy White has delivered some of the freshest Old School hip hop mixes around. Well thought out mixes of some classic hip hop nuggets that many of us never thought we'd hear again. Fantastic mixing and themes running through these cds.
He's now retired the physical copies of his "Fat Tape", "The Way It Was" and "Get Some". But for those of you who have slept on them... no worries. These three classics are now available as free downloads from the man himself, Sloppy White.
Check out the reviews and praise on his page -- they say more than I'll ever be able to get across to you... with kind words from O-Dub, Strictly Kev and the Soulman... who are you to argue!
from Sloppy White: "So please spread the word and enjoy the Golden Era vibes!"

Y: The Last Man (Final Issue!)
Y: The Last Man. After 5 outstanding years and 60 fantastic issues... it's all over. I can't say enough wonderful things about this comic. One of the truly great serialized fictions of today.
The premise (for those of you who haven't been following along) - every male on the planet is wiped out in a plague. Well, every man on planet, except our hero, Yorick Brown (and his monkey, Ampersand). The adventure of Yorick and his posse is truly epic.
I'd recommend it to everyone... go buy the first trade paperback (reprinting the first five issues of the series). Try your local comic shops or book stores -- and if you're more of an online shopper -- go here!
If you've been reading along, there are some nice interviews with Brian K. Vaughan (writer) and Pia Guerra (artist) over at Newsarama.
Really - go check this out.....

Punks the Comic - The Christacular Special
Ok, the Xmas season is well over - but I'm so far behind on my reading that I'm just getting around to the xmas issue of Punks the Comic, The Christacular Special #1! Fantastic.
A comic book done cut-up collage style. Punks the Comic creators Fialkov and Chamberlain give us a great ride. How can you go wrong when your lead character is Abe Lincoln?? Guest starring Chuck Dickens... "you mess with dickens you get burned baby!"
From the back cover: "Back to raise holy day spirits and battle the forces of evil, Abe, Fist, Skull, and Dog return in a 52 page long extravaganza of the Winter Festival of Lights/Resurrection/African Heritage/Dick Clark."
also: "Approved by Jesus, Buddha, and various cult leaders, there is no better way to celebrate the holidays aside from being with your families and world peace."
I personally know this book has an effect on people as my girlfriend quoted lines of the book to me this morning! "I hate you. I hope you all get syphillis of the eyes!"
The Xmas season might be over -- but the Christacular Special still rings true!
See if you can buy this from your local comic shop or head on over to PunksTheComic.com - you can order it from their website. Good one.

Soopajud - I Believe In Music
Truth be told - I have so many mixes - that I've fallen behind on my listening - so jumping ahead in the pile - I come across Soopajud. This guy always features great funk and soul tracks that are really close to the stuff I usually use in my own mixes.
So with no hesitation, I felt that jumping forward to Soopajud's mix, I Believe In Music, would be a wise decision -- and yes, success! A great selection of funky soul tracks on this mix and a very cool cover too.... put it on your ipod already.

King Cannibal - Life on the Beat
King Cannibal (the artist formerly known as 'ZILLA') comes through with 30 minutes of scorching hot drum and bass all mixed up nicey nice.
I count 82 tracks in 30 minutes! I'm no DNB guy by any means - but this was fresh noise to me and I'm digging it. Kicks off with dialog from my new favorite film, Primer. How can I say no to that!
For tracklist and download instructions go to King Cannibal's "Gods of War" website -- it's all there!

The Twelve #1
I'm a couple weeks behind on this one I think (you should see the pile of unread comics and magazines laying about my place - it rivals the pile of un-listened to cd's... very sad!) but I'm glad I picked it up today.
First off, I've never been a big fan of Straczynski, for no apparent reason - I just haven't dug any of his books, that I've read. On the other hand, I do really enjoy Chris Weston's work (big fan of The Filth and Ministry of Space - go read 'em!).
It's a great "rip van winkle" story -- go to sleep in the 1940's -- wake up 60 years in the future -- this issue just barely touches on it, as there is a lot of stage setting and laying the groundwork of who's who.
So you've got 12 golden age superhero types that most of us have never met before, as they were really obscure characters from the 1940's that only appeared rather briefly in publishing history. Straczynski really does a great job of introducing us to the Twelve and I for one, cannot wait to see where this is headed. So far - So Good! Recommended.

Darwin Kick by Ibrahim Dilek (threadless.com)
Here's a new t-shirt available from Threadless, called Darwin Kick. I love the design and am glad that I got my brother to mess around with the evolutionary chart before this t-shirt makes it look like I'm biting!

Buff My Pylon - Return to the Border
Here's a great mix I've been listening to for the past hour or so... nothing fancy but some great tracks on here from a Variety (with a capital V!) of artists. Elvis, The Creeps, Dillinger - what a selection!
Held together with some great movie clips (I heard Russ Meyer's "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! in there). The selection speaks for itself.... Return to the Border.
Go here to download this mix.... (now I've got to go investigate more offerings from Buff My Pylon, like his original "Run For The Border"!)

Zombies vs. Robots vs. Amazons #2
Well there's no denying that Ashley Wood is one of my favorite artists - so it comes as no surprise that I'm recommending Zombies vs. Robots vs. Amazons #2.
This series is better than the original Zombies vs. Robots, I think. It looks to me that the collected edition of the original series is out of print - so check around on ebay for it - it's worth it.
This sequel series takes the Zombies and Robots to the Amazon island where the madness continues and we are introduced to a Zombie Minotaur... I mean what else could you ask for?!
There's one more issue in this 3 issue series and it looks as if they're collecting it into a nice hardcover at a decent pre-order price through amazon.
as the Robot says... Let's Go Kill Stuff!

DJHDD - Robots R Computers
Here's a great mix from DJ Hickory Dickory Doc (DJHDD). Originally intended to be a mix for Solid Steel.....
"This mix was commissioned by Strictly Kev as a companion piece to his Solid Steel Robot mix which aired last week. It was suppose to be a collaboration, however Kev had set himself aside some rules, and he wanted some older sounds & a premise of the future of robotics from the view point of the past. A large percentage of his songs were old rock n roll based, whilst most of what I had were more electro, I was after the “sound” of a robot, vocoders & futuristic music; robots singing the Beatles, the talking dictionary tripping out to the Orb, robots falling in love & looking after our basic needs."
"After fishing the net for anything I could find on robots, I started to hear some fabulous “unknown” bands, mainly from Myspace. Meeting up with Kev in July we decided that I would help with samples but that we would go on to do 2 separate mixes."
Anyways - 2 hours of Robot mixes seemed to be too much for the show - so it was cut. Regardless, I think it's a great effort and a fantastic mix.... go check it out!

20 Years of Solid Steel - the Celebration Begins!
2008 marks the 20th anniversary of Solid Steel's first appearance on the airwaves so they've raided Coldcut's archives and got together with collectors from around the world to bring you vintage mixes and shows from yesteryear. The regular show will feature a glimpse into the pre-internet past every two weeks and more content will be available for download at bosbos.net. BosBos has kindly agreed to host material for us as well as dusting off his own collection of tapes alongside King Megatrip (oh yeah, that's me!)
To kick off the celebration we've dug out the legendary meeting of Coldcut and the Orb from the KissFM Solid Steel show, circa 1991! The first hour is featured on Solid Steel this week. (While you're there - there's an excellent new mix from DJ Saffrolla!) The second hour of Coldcut meets the Orb is available from our friend BosBos -- download in full effect.
Also, stop by Strictly Kev's myspace blog for more info on the show than you thought possible!
over and out.

The Immortal Iron Fist #12 (Book of the Week)
ok - as I said, my weblog here will be featuring some cool comics now and then...
well, this is the pick-of the week! The Immortal Iron Fist #12! It absolutely has to be one of the best new books of last year, no doubt.
What a fantastic, "keep you wanting more" story. David Aja's art in the tournament scenes - brilliant!
Plus Davos get's his ass kicked and Brubaker/Fraction come up with the title to an upcoming King Megatrip mix -- maybe the best name of a kung-fu move ever... "Jawsnapper in Twilight"!
go buy the first trade paperback which reprints the first six issues. really not to be missed!
