Solid Steel - July 13th.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (13th July).

It's a downtempo start from DK this week with the Massive Attack remix for Nas, followed by more electronic beats from Tobio, Dobie and Eprom, before sliding effortlessly into 'Celestial Blues' by Gary Bartz. Then it's new music from Jeremiah Jae on Brainfeeder and Thavius Beck on Plug Research, before turning heavy with the Om Unit remix for Beat inc and double time with Fracture. It's more new music from Solid Steel favourite CID Rim, Kloke and Bandshell taking us to the end of hour 1, but not before squeezing in a couple of classics from Azymuth and Carl Craig.

DJ Irk returns for hour 2 with a promo mix ahead of his gig with DJ Kentaro at XOYO on Saturday and naturally it features new album tracks from the Japanese turntable maestro. We continue with tracks from Foreign Beggars, Darq E Freaker featuring the excellent Danny Brown and Reso, before taking it down with 3 from RZA, Kidkanevil and Yosi Horikawa.

Paper Tiger finish the show with tracks from their new Priceless EP and tracks across the musical spectrum from Fantastic Mr Fox, Tuneyards, Gal Costa and Jaga Jazzist, just the way we like it.

Ninja Tune feature with Mr Scruff, Toddla T, Raffertie and Fink, with Big Dada represented by Wiley & Offshore. The votes are in, polling stations closed and for the second year running DJ Irk gets your vote for Mix of the Year 2011. He cropped up a few times this year, but it was his mix from March that was the most popular with some bone crunching beats from the likes of Broken Note, Bassnectar and our very own King Cannibal. Then on to some electro-hip hop flavours, showcasing sounds from Dizz1, Cherry Chan and Kiat, plus music from Machinedrum, Bonobo and Modeselektor all mixed to the highest standard.

Solid Steel - Dec. 02

Solid Steel in association with Serato (2nd December).

Robin Hexstatic back in the mix again this week. We start off with classic Angie Stone,..remixed twice, first by Gatto Viola and then beefed up by Doc Daneka and on into some vintage house from Karen Pollack remixed by the mighty Murk. Julio Bashmore's inimitable 'Battle for middle you' mixes nicely into some more vintage house,..this time the classic 'Break Of Dawn' from Rhythm On The Loose. Bang up to date now with Dauwd's 'Ikopol', new Martyn with the epic 'We Are You In The Future' and a Hexstatic favorite - Akira Kiteshi with the bulging bass of 'Transmission'. Fourtet's lovely remix of Caribou brings us down nicely for a bit, before we slam into new Ninja Tune signing Starkey with 'Villagers'. It's more from the label courtesy of 16 Bit's remix of Amon Tobin's 'Surge', then the brilliant Amen heavy remix of Africa Hitech leads into the Transformers sampling drumstep of Heist, before we mellow things down with Isotroph and another fave beatsmith,..George Lenton, with On Repeat.

In hour 2 DJ Irk presents his 'Too much pressure' mix kicking off in his typical style with a sample heavy spoken word intro and onto some chunky west-coast beats from favourites illGates and Bassnectar, then transition through funk and blues and on to a few rocky beats from Kid Koala and DJ Shadow. Picking up the pace we move on to some funky midtempo sounds, including Dave Nada and Tipper, then finally out to new fLako wonkiness and low-end from Gatekeeper, Joker and Halp.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (8th July).

Irk's back, and this time he's on a dubstep, grime and hiphop mission, with this special collaboration mix for Solid Steel and Montreal's bassmusic podcast J'aime Le Dubstep. We kick off with a few serious UK sounds from Durrty Goodz and BeggarFam, then hit some swirling electronic heaviness from Matta and Siriusmo. Next it's over to the hiphop for fresh Raekwon and Beasties, plus pure wonkiness from Eprom and South London's KeepUp! crew. And finally back to more beats and bass from the likes of Culprate and Pinch & Roska, plus Kid Koala's The Slew project, Wick-It's Black Keys refix and a familiar Bristol beat right at the end to tie it all up.

Coldcut step up for the second week with Matt Black providing a more laid back party mix kicking off with Afro and reggae sounds courtesy of Mulatu Astatke and Sound Dimension. It's a brief switch up with Sub Focus and the unmistakable sound of Junior Read, classic beats from Lamb and Jake Slazenger, before weaving through Imagination, Jay Z and the lush strings of Love Unlimited Orchestra. We draw to a close with classics from Fela Kuti and James Brown, and recent cuts from Tricksi and Blend aka Mishkin. That's some party!

Solid Steel - March 25

Solid Steel in association with Serato (25th March).

Irk steps back up to the Solid Steel decks for the first time since winning last year's MOTY title, bringing with him his usual knack for juxtaposing quality track sequences with detailed scratch prowess and absurd sampling. He sets up with another signature hiphop intro, then makes a break for some bone-crunching beats from the likes of Broken Note, Bassnectar and our very own King Cannibal. Then it's on to some electro-hiphop flavours, showcasing a bunch of great new sounds from friendly producers the world over, including Dizz1, Cherry Chan and Kiat, and irk's Montreal-based pal Living Stone. Throw in a Bonobo track from the NinjaTune XX celebrations and a couple of UK hiphop giants on the way then it's over to the dubstep and breaks for a solid landing.

DK continues in a similar vein with Boddika and the Sepalcure remix of Tailor-made by Deadelus, before taking it right down with more from Matthewdavid, recent guest Jonny Faith and two Blue Note classics from Alphonse Mouzon and the sublime 'Harlem River Drive' by Bobbi Humphrey.

solid steel (17 Dec 2010)

Solid Steel in association with Serato (17th December).

We approach the end of the year and it's time for last year's champ Mr Armtone to hand over the crown to this year's winner, but not before showing us he's latest mix. It's another quality selection kicking off with the skanking sounds of The Revolutionaries remixed by DJ Kentaro, Colourbox and Yabby You, before deftly switching up with Defkline & Red Polo's take on the classic Ragga Tip. We continue through breaks, Dubstep, Drumstep, D n B, you name it, from the last couple of years, plus some classics from Sister Nancy, Chemical Brothers and Ultramagnetic MC's.

In hour 2 we hand over the crown to this year's winner. You voted DJ Irk's mix from October as your favourite this year ( with Task, United States of Audio and Brayaz close behind). It was his mad mix of goodies pushing the boundaries, with artists ranging from Noisia, Dr Octagon and Bassnectar to Jean Knight, The Blind Boys of Alabama and Flight Of The Conchords that won it for you.

solid steel (15 Jan 2010)

Solid Steel in association with Serato (January 15th).

This week DJ Irk takes to the decks, fresh from playing with our man Cheeba in the Alps. A mix that cuts up everything in sight has Foreign Beggars, Mr. Scruff, The Beach Boys, The Prodigy and the Average White Band all jostling for space.

Hour 2 starts with Producion Unit, one of Glasgow’s best kept secrets. Brimming with off kilter electronica, slow slung bass riddims and future hip hop of the highest quality with music from Flying Lotus, The Pharcyde , Harmonic 313 and J Dilla straight from your speakers.

DK wraps up the show with a mix of the new Blockhead album titled "The music Scene". It's his 3rd album and he has always made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on 'The Music Scene' he elevates his craft to another level.
