Solid Steel (22nd March).
Solid Steel (22nd March).
Coldcut in charge this week, easing in with a reggae selection featuring Horace Andy, Tapper Zukie and Baba Dread, before switching into the much sampled Anne Murray and stripping it right back with Unforscene. The beats get heavy with Clicks & Whistles, Krueger and Swindle on Deep Medi Musik, then more reggae from Lone Ranger and Peter Tosh and closing with legendary British jazz figure John Cameron.
In our 25th Anniversary slot, we welcome back Fink, who has appeared many times on Solid Steel dating back to 1999. We asked for something a little different and taking a brief break from the studio in LA where he's demoing up the new Fink album, he delivers us 30 minutes of avant-bard-core for the ear waves. It's music from The Horrors, Bjork, Fever Ray and House of Black Lanterns, with a couple of remixes courtesy of 16 Bit and Scuba. The new Fink EP 'Warm Shadow' is available for download this week.
Finally, it's a mix from Natural Self to close the show. His new album 'Neon hurts my eyes' is out now on Tru Thoughts and we get a taste of some of the tracks, including his great version of Laurie Anderson's 'O Superman', plus music from The Units, Innerzone Orchestra and the sublime 'The Other Song' by Son of Spirit from 1975.

Solid Steel (15th February).
Solid Steel (15th February).
Coldcut in the hot seat this week with a top draw Reggae selection from Dennis Brown, Earl Sixteen, The Arabs and Ossie All Stars. We stay in Jamaica, but take a funk turn with Mark Holder, before heading to New Orleans for music from the legendary Allen Toussaint, Roy head from 1965 and the collaboration of Don Cherry and Latif Khan to close.
We welcome Chris Carter from Throbbing Gristle in our 25th Anniversary slot, an influential group for Jon More from Coldcut and in his own words;
"Its 1977 I was 20 & at art college in High Wycombe, 1976 had been a good year...the Sex Pistols had gate crashed our end of year party & The Clash played at the Student Union bar...The Nags Head Pub had given me an education in all things punk, then Throbbing Gristle played and everything changed. See the review from the local paper on the Solid Steel Facebook page
I could not understand why everyone got so upset...After this initiation i started going up to London to buy records from Rough Trade...I had to wait until November & then as I walked into the shop - the last moments of Second Annual Report were playing...I think it was Maggot Death-recorded live in Brighton... pretty much a recording of the local dj insulting the band after they have left the stage... I bought the album, wrote about them for Stabmental Fanzine, put on a gig on at Goldsmiths College... went to about 12 of TG's gigs all over the country.. bought all the records... still have the flyers... a fan.
Throbbing Gristle was such an influence from the Industrial Records hyper branding to the sonic assault of their live shows... Still the deepest bass I have ever felt was at a TG's gig at Centro Iberico in London....
So we at Solid Steel are proud to have a mix from Chris Carter founder member of Throbbing Gristle and member of Chris & Cosi undoubtedly a major influence on todays electronic music...

Solid Steel (25th January).
Solid Steel (25th January).
Coldcut return this week and straight in with classic British soul from Family Stand and Soul II Soul and no let up with Roy Ayers, Linda Clifford and Inner Life with the glorious 'Moment of my life'. Then it's another soulful gem from Billy Byrd before moving into Detroit with Carl Davis on Planet E and continue in that zone with a Carl Craig remix for Spacetime Continuum and Carl Craig himself with the track 'Timing'.
Our guest for the 25th Anniversary slot in Hour 2 is Kirk Degiorgio, well known for his own Techno productions, he also covers a wide spectrum of musical styles especially with his own taste in music. We ask our guests for something different and following his last appearance on Solid Steel in 2005, he returns with a beautiful Ambient mix titled "A Beatless Planet". We suggest headphones firmly in place and somewhere to relax as we drift through music from Gil Melle, Roy Budd, Kraftwerk, Piero Piccioni and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. This is just the first hour and we will be back with the second half later in the year.

Coldcut meets The Orb - The Return Trip.
Coldcut meets The Orb - The Return Trip.
Solid Steel 11th January.
Recorded on the anniversary of JFK's assassination and 21 years after their historic '92 New Year mix on Kiss 100 FM, Coldcut meets The Orb inna Uptown Youth House for the Return Trip. Matt Black and Jonathan More alongside studio accomplice Dor Wand got suitably enhanced with Dr LX Paterson and Youth for a multi-player late night jam session lasting over 3 hours. They then entrusted the multitracks of the set to DJ Food who heroically edited, condensed and massaged the sprawling swamp of sound into a tight - but also loose - 2 hour Solid Steel session.
Swimming through the mix are Lee Perry, Killing Joke, Sun Ra, William Burroughs, Teebs, Ry Cooder, Actress, Prince Jammy, Iggy Pop, Monty Python, Hank Williams and Hal 9000. Alongside unreleased dubs from the players themselves, remixes and versions of tunes old and new, the complete track listing for this marathon set may never be fullly disclosed. It's 2 hours, 10 minutes of sonic secrets to melt your mind, probably best listened to in headphones late at night with all suitable facilities for the full effect. Enjoy this trip.

Solid Steel - Jan 04.
Solid Steel in association with Serato (4th January).
It's 2013 and we're celebrating 25 years of 'The Broadest Beats' on Solid Steel. But first we take a look at where it all began, before Solid Steel even started.
On the pirate station Kiss FM in the mid to late eighties Matt Black and Jon More both had separate shows, we hear clips from both and then as they joined forces in 1988 prior to Kiss shutting down whilst applying for legal status at the end of the year.
To start with we scan the airwaves through various London Pirate Stations of the time, landing at Kiss 94 FM to hear Matt Black's Mastermix Dance Party dropping exclusive Coldcut tracks for the first time and music from the emerging House scene. Jon More takes over with the Meltdown Party playing 'new' releases from The Beastie Boys, Eric B & Rakim and Adrian Sherwood plus the original version of 'The Only Way Is Up' that they later covered with Yazz and took to the top of the charts.
Then we hear them together for their last show on the Pirate Kiss 94 FM whilst waiting for a licence. Music comes from Kraftwerk plus a Todd Terry workout and, as they say goodbye, we hear a farewell from Kiss founder Gordon Mac and the announcement of a new commercial station for London...
In hour 2 we step forward to 1990 and a legalised Kiss 100 FM with Solid Steel on a Friday night. House music has evolved and mutated and we hear a Coldcut Mastermix featuring C'hantel, Pink Noise, LFO and the first Ninja Tune release by Zen Bones. Coldcut keep it funky with Matata and Ju-Par Universal Orchestra, plus hard Latin from Dom Um Romao and the first spin from Major Force, before dropping another Mastermix.
We then move to Saturday night for the second half and tracks from Rebel MC and Demon Boyz pave the way for the Jungle scene. The next Mastermix features De La Soul, Prince, DJ Food and Maze and we finish with tracks touching on rave, IDM and breakbeat territory with The Black Dog, Doc Scott and DJ PC.

Solid Steel - Nov.02
Solid Steel in association with Serato (2nd November).
It's a suitably seasonal start from Coldcut this week with the classic Irresistible Force mix of Autumn Leaves, extending over the equally lush Dr. Chinme by Lusine Icl and the Capac remix for Spokes. Then it's low slung beats from Caro Intelecto, Marmion from 94 and Boards of Canada from 98. It's a change of tone from De La Soul and then we're into a reggae selection from Sly & Robbie, King Tubby, Scotty and Willie Williams.
In hour 2 we are treated to more of a session than a mix from Archie Pelago, as they perform brand new tunes live exclusively for Solid Steel. A firm favourite with Coldcut, we've featured both their music and remixes on the show before. It's a gentle start for the New York based trio with 'House of Haab' and a steady rise throughout the mix to a frenzied conclusion with 'Lakeside Obelisk' showcasing their talents combining live instruments with electronics.
DK once again completes the circle taking it back down with forthcoming music from Letherette, the much talked about Kendrick Lamar and Flying Lotus, plus another cut from the Stubborn Heart album. Then it's an acoustic guitar finish with Pop Levi, Jeb Loy Nichols and two from the legendary Terry Callier RIP.

Solid Steel - Aug24
Solid Steel in association with Serato (24th August).
It's a carnival warm up this week with DK setting the stage with new music from Chrissy Murderbot, Toddla T and The Bug, reggae selections from Prince Jammy, Turbo Belly and Barrington Levy, passing jungle soundsystems with DJ C and Tribe of Issachar and ending up at Norman Jay with The Flirtations.
Coldcut continue with the sweet vocals of Gregory Isaacs, then it's two from Roska, more Toddla T and Dekoy remixed by Pirate Soundsystem. Soca rhythms from Scrappy keep us on the move and Wiley drops in for two cuts, before we take a break with classic U-Roy, with Bunny Lee on production.
PC makes a special return to the show to continue the carnival atmosphere with two Jamaican cuts riding the Agony Riddim from Super Cat and King Kong. Then it's closer to home with DJ Vadim featuring Demolition Man and Roots Manuva with Bashment Boogie, followed by Solid Steel staple 'one Blood' by Junior Reid, classic jungle from Conquering Lion and ending with 'Walk and Skank' by Jah Screechy.
Our guest mix this week comes from Kiki Hitomi, a member of King Midas Sound on Hyperdub records alongside Kevin Martin (The Bug) and Roger Robinson. We hear their trademark sounds alongside music from The Kills remixed by The Bug, Bjork and Clause Four, plus we hear Kiki Hitomi revoicing tracks by Zomby, Mark Pritchard and Evian Christ as well.

Solid Steel - Aug 03.
Solid Steel in association with Serato (3rd August).
It's a sport related show this week and Coldcut drop a mix dedicated to all things cycling, taking in a few left turns, one or two wobbles and plenty of freewheeling in support of Critical Mass. You'll ride past music for the self propelled from artists like Brentford Allstars, Nazareth, The Orb and Autechre, before reaching the end of the road with Tour De France by Kraftwerk.
Hour 2 opens with the mighty DJ Kentaro, gold medalist in the DMC World Championships and our number one DJ who has also released his own Solid Steel mix CD. This mix celebrates the release of his new album 'Contrast' mixing up tracks from the album alongside music from Foreign Beggars, The Revolutionaries, Rusko and Slugabed in his own inimitable style.
DK continues with a vaguely sporting related mix to end the show featuring Gil Scott-Heron and Baby Huey on the Athletics track, Oh No Ono and Arthur Russell in the Aquatics centre and John Klemmer on top of the podium.

Inspired by the hot weather in London, Coldcut return with a suitable selection to start, with reggae from John Holt, Tony Dread and Bobby Ellis, before a seamless mix into Gary Numan and Tubeway Army. Sabres of Paradise get an orchestral treatment from In The Nursery and it's a trio of accoustic guitar tracks from John and Beverley Martin, Bert Jansch and Family. We take a more electronic route into the second half with Swindle, Dam Mantle and the Breakage remix for Roots Manuva.
Marc Mac from 4 Hero and Visioneers supplies the guest mix this week celebrating the release of his album Hipology and it's a dive into the crates for classic cuts from Larry Willis, Jack Wilkins and Prophets of Soul with their killer version of Ain't no Sunshine, plus tracks from the Visioneers album as well.
We finish on an interview with Grasscut who discuss their new album 'Unearth' out on Ninja Tune, which features ten songs shaped by landscape and memory and they tell us more about the alternative versions that are hidden across the UK. We also hear some of their music and inspirational tracks from Robert Wyatt and Joy Division.

Reworking nearly every track in the mix, we get Mozart meeting Ja rule, Jadakiss and Fat joe, heavy metal from Danzig, Greek legends Aphrodite's Child and Cheap Trick, plus more hip hop and electronic treats all given the Hot Sugar stamp.
